WINSTON-SALEM — On Aug. 8, Rev. Charlie Davis, along with his wife, Gail, relocated to West Bend, Ind. Sound like something you’d hear any day? Well, not so with this Unitarian Universalist Fellowship activist clergy person.
Davis, according to The Winston-Salem Journal, refused to marry straight couples. Instead, he opted for a religious service at the church for both LGBT and straight twosomes. This decision in 2004 came out of his sensitivity to couples who fell out of the normal spectrum. He and his wife are biracial. He knew that up until the 1960s, marriage between an African-American and a white person were illegal. He had also participated in a protest with Communities Helping All Neighbors Gain Empowerment against the YMCA of Northwest Carolina as a response to the YMCA policy on same-sex couple membership.
