Oh, captain! My captain!

RALEIGH — Want to make a difference in helping to raise much needed funds for North Carolina’s state social justice champion? Then step up to the plate and volunteer to be a table captain at the Equality NC Foundation (ENCF) 2010 Equality Gala on Nov. 13 in Greensboro at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro’s Elliott University Center. This premier event has been growing in numbers over the last several years. And, it’s what has made this powerhouse such a force with which to be reckoned.

ENCF hopes to raise $50,000 to educate LGBT North Carolinians and their allies about ending LGBT employment discrimination in the state.

Last year, the Foundation’s unrelenting work helped to bring to fruition the passage of the School Violence Prevention Act. It also honored Sen. Julia Boseman for her stand against school bullying.

The Foundation would like to hear from volunteers by Labor Day. Signing up is easy. Staffer Shawn Long will walk participants through the process by adding their names to the online registration site. Nine friends can sign up to be at a particular captain’s table. Captains can keep apprised on who is accepting invitations by visiting the site.

Captains have the option of paying $1,450 up front for a table so their friends won’t have to pay in exchange for a generous tax break. Alternatively, participants can pay $1,000 to sponsor a table for students who would not otherwise be able to attend.

Cost to attend the Gala is $145 individuals ($175 after Oct. 22) , $75 for students ($95 after Oct. 22) and $85 for people with income challenges (reduced rate not available after Oct. 22). Registration is complimentary for each person who has made gifts totaling $1,200 or more to Equality NC and Equality NC Foundation during calendar year 2010.

To register or for more information, call Long at 919-829-0343 ext. 114, email shawn@shawn@equalitync.org or visit equalitync.org.
