The executive director of Equality North Carolina, the statewide LGBT equality group based in Raleigh, says a Republican member of the state House of Representatives should apologize after using anti-gay slurs in an email to fellow Republicans.
Rep. Larry Brown, who represents portions of Forsyth County and Kernersville, called gay people “queers” and “fruitloops” in response to an email sent out by Republican House Minority Leader Paul Stam, which discussed House Speaker Joe Hackney’s selection as Equality North Carolina’s 2010 Legislative Leadership Award recipient.
“I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him,” Brown’s Sept. 27 email read, according to The Charlotte Observer. “I am sure there will be a couple legislative fruitloops there in the audience.”
Brown’s email was sent out to about 60 fellow Republicans.
“I think it’s disgusting to see a member of the legislature talking about his own constituents and fellow North Carolinians that way,” Palmquist told the daily newspaper. “I would hope that he would apologize and his colleagues would speak out about that kind of bigotry.”
Stam would not say whether or not he’d spoken to Brown regarding the email, but did say Brown shouldn’t have to apologize publicly.
“It was not sent to a public group,” Stam said. “There’s a lot of language that is used by public officials in public and private that should not be used. I don’t use that language myself.”

i just love how we can get so outrage over the smallest things. I would be more upset if he said this to the press or sent the email to the press himself. However it was a personal email to his fellow GOP members.

Queer,, how many times have we used the word, movies and other items.. use both way in term good and bad… Its time for the LGBT community to grow the F-up

Public officials need to hold themselves to a higher standard. It’s really as simple as that. This isn’t the biggest deal in the world, but does show a kind of prejudicial way of thinking that would be unacceptable were the denigrated class, say, women or African-Americans.
He should simply apologize and then the 24-hour news cycle would move on. If he doesn’t, that refusal then becomes the problem — as it should.
yet we don’t demand the same from our groups whom are willing to throw a large part of community under the bus when they need to… MMM like with the HRC throw the Trans-community under the bus to same DOMA or was it ENDA.. anywho its really bad for us when we protest and boycott one of our very own Org’s…..
