Rally to be major aspect of Pride celebration
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — On Oct. 3, 6 p.m., a marriage equality rally will be held at Pack Square Park, 121 College St., to highlight the struggle of gays and lesbians to achieve the same rights as other straight couples, the ability to marry whom they choose and if married elsewhere, be recognized in North Carolina.
GayAshevilleNC and Blue Ridge Pride and its community outreach are the organizers of the celebration rally and is expected to draw hundreds of supporters from across Western North Carolina to show the state legislature that it is time for the freedom to marry.
The program will consist of testimonials from couples, both married and only partnered awaiting to be married, on what it means to them to be recognized. Joining them will be area clergy who both support and have taken a strong stand to overturn North Carolina’s ban on same-sex marriage, along with supportive congregations. They will lend their insights and perspectives on the issue. Straight couples and allies will also be participants for the event.
Guest performances from Cantaria, Asheville’s gay men’s chorus, and poet and lyricist Gavin Dillard will highlight the rally.
The grand finale will be a celebration of equality unity with the LGBT community, clergy and straight allies together vowing to continue until the North Carolina ban is dissolved.
For those who attend, organizers are asking everyone to wear red and show support.
