ALFA celebration honors volunteers, survivors

CONOVER, N.C. — AIDS Leadership Foothills-Area Alliance will celebrate HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day, as well as the organization’s volunteers, at an appreciation cookout on June 5, 5 p.m., at Conover City Park, 361 5th Ave S.E.

Those volunteers being recognized are: Steve Yount Memorial Award, Queenie Gabor; Angel Volunteer, Stephen Heavner; Candlelight Award, Hickory Community Theater; Distinguished Business Philanthropist, Café Rule; Distinguished Board Member, Derek Zealy-Wright; Behind the Scenes, Ed Cooper, Union Square Computers; Distinguished Community Partner, Kenny Brown, Quality Kutz; and Volunteer Group, Wells Fargo Pride Team.

Yard sale rescheduled

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — The Metropolitan Community Church Sacred Journey yard sale has been rescheduled for June 23, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the First Congregation Church parking lot located at 1735 5th Ave. W.

The yard sale is one of the sizable fundraisers of the year for the church. Sort through drawers, closets and more to find items to donate for a good cause. Purchasers will be able to find bargains on gently used items to choose from such as music CDs, videos, luggage, furniture, housewares, electronics, toys, games, tools, books, craft items and more.

Vet benefit upcoming

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A fundraising Full Moon in June benefit is being held for Aura Home Women Vets on June 29, 6 p.m., at Patton Parker House, 95 Charlotte St.

Featured at the event will be musician Linda Mitchell, a “Big AI” pop country singer/songwriter.

Participants can bring picnic baskets, blankets and low chairs for an evening of music, s’mores and camaraderie. Desserts will be provided by Aura Home.

Aura Home is a non-profit that works to prevent homelessness for women veterans in Western North Carolina.

Tickets are $20/advance online and $25 at the door.
