The 2008 comedy film “Happy Holidays” tells the story of three childhood friends reuniting in their Connecticut hometown ahead of Christmas. The three men attempt to relive the past, simultaneously discovering who each other have become, which includes starkly different worldviews.
Patrick, an atheist and one of the few openly gay me in town, is at the center of the story. He is trying to figure out his life, including whether or not he wants to stay with his partner, while his friends return with problems of their own. He is all too willing to focus on his friends’ concerns and put off his own, which nonetheless hang over him.
While digging up a time capsule brings back pleasant memories of less complicated times, it also serves to remind them just how stuck in the present they all feel. They are left to try to make sense of who they were, who they are now and where to go in the future. The topics of family and friends, acceptance and taking stock of one’s life are particularly relatable this time of year.
“Happy Holidays” was directed by James Ferguson and written by Ferguson and Tom Misuraca. It stars Paul Hungerford, John B. Crye and Thomas Rhoads.
