CHARLESTON, S.C. — Local TV stations are standing by a Charleston lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) education group and its set of three different ads raising awareness on a number of gay rights issues. One of the ads targets South Carolina’s Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.
An announcer in the ad targeting DeMint says, “What if you saw this headline: Sen. Jim DeMint: Jews Should Not Teach Public School. Substitute the word ‘gay’ and you do.”
The ad and two others are part of the Alliance for Full Acceptance’s annual advertising education and awareness campaign.
DeMint has said repeatedly that openly lesbian or gay people should not be allowed to teach, including twice in campaign speeches in 2004 and 2010.
DeMint supporters want the ads taken off the air and say that the ads could mislead the public by insinuating that DeMint is anti-Semitic, according to The Post and Courier.
Alliance for Full Acceptance Director Warren Redman-Gress said the stations will continue to air the 30-second ad.
“We are really thankful the TV stations see the value in what we’re doing, and, in that first salvo, have stood by us,” he said.
The group’s ads began airing on June 18. The $30,000 campaign will end this month. Redman-Gress said his group hopes to raise money to air the ads in other parts of the state this fall.
