Charlotte nonprofit The Lotus Project is bringing “Shrek the Musical” to the stage Nov. 19–21, with a special opening-night celebration dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community and a production that reflects the organization’s commitment to making theater more accessible and inclusive.

The performances follow a summer initiative supported by an Arts & Science Council grant that introduced transgender and gender-diverse Charlotteans to community theater through free arts workshops in partnership with Charlotte Trans Health, Time Out Youth and Gender Education Network.

Founded in 2023 by Susan Cherin and Kayla Piscatelli, The Lotus Project uses theater, visual arts and other creative programs to build community, encourage self-expression and create opportunities for people of different ages, backgrounds and abilities to participate in the arts.

Based on the 2001 animated film, “Shrek the Musical” brings familiar characters to the stage in a musical about a group of misfits who band together to challenge a corrupt king determined to make everyone conform. The family-friendly production explores themes of individuality, acceptance and belonging, with performers of different ages, backgrounds and abilities sharing the stage.

The Nov. 19 opening-night performance will feature a celebration of Charlotte’s LGBTQ+ community, with Time Out Youth, Charlotte Trans Health and Gender Education Network participating in a post-show community conversation.

The evening will also include sensory-friendly elements through a partnership with Precious Developments, including noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools and a quiet room for audience members who need them.

For Cherin, creating opportunities for people to participate in theater goes beyond what happens onstage. During an earlier interview with Qnotes about the organization’s summer initiative, she emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment for people who may not otherwise feel comfortable participating in community theater.

“It’s just again about building connections, like within our community, and creating a safe space,” Cherin said.

The organization’s approach has also resonated with audiences. Audience member Maura Grout praised The Lotus Project for its commitment to ensuring performances carry meaning beyond the production itself.

“What truly sets them apart is their undeniable commitment to ensuring that each performance leaves audiences with a profound understanding of its underlying meaning and purpose,” Grout said.

The upcoming production continues that approach by bringing performers together for a musical that celebrates individuality while highlighting the importance of community and acceptance.

Performances are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19, Friday, Nov. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m.
