CHARLOTTE — A popular Friday-night club and bar event for gays is heading out of town and into the North Carolina mountains for a weekend of winter fun.

Just in time for the holidays, Takeover Friday is organizing its first annual Weekend Takeover Friday in Blowing Rock. The event will be held Dec. 5-7 at popular area B&B–s including the Maple Lodge and the Inn at Crestwood.

Dan Mauney, Takeover organizer, said the idea for the weekend rendezvous first came about after talks of other weekend trips to surrounding Carolina cities.

“We’ve been wanting to do this for awhile,” Mauney said. “We’d wanted to do Takeover on the road and hop around. We originally had another idea about leasing busses and taking people out to Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Raleigh and other places for a Friday or Saturday.”

Mauney said he and Scott McIntosh, a realtor with Blowing Rock Investment Properties, have been working on the weekend getaway.

The weekend will feature a Friday evening party at the Maple Lodge Bed and Breakfast with a raffle for an eight foot Christmas tree and two holiday wreaths. On Saturday, folks will be able to take tours of Blowing Rock homes and pick out their own Appalachian Christmas tree. On Saturday evening, participants can grab dinner at the Inn at Crestwood. Sunday will feature a brunch.

“There are a lot of Charlotte boys who have second homes up there,” Mauney said. “Some of them venture up there regularly. We thought it would be fun to bring all of them together and encourage others from Blowing Rock and Boone to come together and have a party.”

Mauney gave McIntosh the credit of being “the brainchild” for the event. “I’m just bringing the people,” he said.

As of Q-Notes deadline for this issue, Mauney said he’d heard 20-30 people had already expressed interest in the getaway.
