Senator Lindsey Graham

In a New York Times feature piece, South Carolina’s U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham humorously dismissed rumors that he’s a gay man in the closet. The senator was responding to writer Robert Draper’s question regarding ALIPAC activist William Gheen’s assertion that Graham’s vote on immigration reform was being coerced by Democrats threatening to out him.

Graham smirked when I brought this up. “Like maybe I’m having a clandestine affair with Ricky Martin,” he said. “I know it’s really gonna upset a lot of gay men — I’m sure hundreds of ’em are gonna be jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge — but I ain’t available. I ain’t gay. Sorry.”

Gheen said that it’s a well-known fact in Washington that Graham is gay, and that by outing him he would no longer be subject to blackmail.

Sen. Graham has received a zero percent score from the Human Rights Campaign for each of his terms in office. He also opposed repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
