IRMO, S.C. — Members of SC Equality rallied in front of Dutch Fork High School last night to demand Lexington-Richland School District 5 immediately fire Irmo High School Principal Eddie Walker or force his immediate resignation.
The school board met last night to consider a new policy on student-initiated, extra-curricular clubs, including the Irmo gay-straight alliance. Walker had announced previously he would resign, effective June 2009, because he was being forced to allow the club.
According to The State (see video report) dozens of SC Equality members lined Broad River Rd. with signs of support for Irmo’s LGBT students and the club. At a rally outside the school, SC Equality Board member, the Rev. Bennie Colclough said Walker’s presence at the school for another full year would cause irreparable damage to the district and LGBT students.
A handful of anti-gay, religious protestors attempted interrupting SC Equality’s rally.
During the school board meeting, parents and community members were allowed to address the board. Some parents stood in support of Walker while some students and community members again pleaded with the board of Walker’s immediate firing.
