CHARLOTTE — The LGBT Community Center of Charlotte will host its second annual Stonewall Celebration on Saturday, June 30, 3-8 p.m., in Plaza Midwood.

The event, to be held in front of Petra’s and The Penguin Drive-In at the corner of Commonwealth Ave. and Thomas St., will include musical entertainment, several vendors, food and drink specials and other special happenings. Several LGBT-themed documentaries will also be screened, including the 1999 film “After Stonewall.”

The center’s event, co-sponsored by Petra’s and The Penguin, commemorates the June 28, 1969 riots at New York City’s Stonewall Inn. The historic event, which spawned the Pride Month of June and Pride celebrations across the globe, is credited as the birth of the modern-day LGBT civil rights movement.

The event is free and open to the public. Following the event, Petra’s and The Penguin will host their own regular weekend activities.
