Thom Tillis

A report from Buzzfeed’s Chris Geidner on Monday afternoon reveals that the anti-LGBT National Organization for Marriage has spent $100,000 supporting Republican Thom Tillis in the state’s U.S. Senate race.

Geidner reported filings from the Federal Elections Commission, which show the anti-gay group spent $117,000 on postcard mailers on behalf of Tillis, the state House speaker. Additionally, the group will spend $8,400 on a commercial supporting “traditional marriage” on Monday’s 6 p.m. news broadcast on Charlotte’s WBTV.

Tillis, along with state Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger, have said they’ll continue defending North Carolina’s anti-LGBT constitutional amendment. They’ve hired attorneys affiliated with the National Organization for Marriage.

The National Organization for Marriage contributed more than $400,000 to the state’s anti-gay marriage amendment campaign in 2012, the referendum committee’s single-largest contribution.
