Two years ago today, tragedy struck at Pulse, an Orlando LGBTQ nightclub, taking 49 innocent lives in what was the single-deadliest attack on LGBTQ people in U.S. history.

The attack at Pulse on June 12, 2016, came during Pride Month — a time when our community usually looks back in celebration and commemoration of our history and all that we have accomplished in the nearly 50 years since the riots at Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn. Pulse, like Stonewall, was a place designed for community, for welcome, for safety. The June 2106 attack proved that Pride Month must be about more than parties.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost, the lives changed — the friends and the family who woke up in the middle of the night to the awful news that their loved one would not come home.
