CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Business Guild has opened nominations for this year’s Don King Community Service Awards.

Presented annually, the awards recognize LGBT and straight ally leaders and community members who exhibit the same visibility and leadership of Don King, who founded or led many of the Queen City’s early LGBT community organizations.

The Guild will accept nominations for three awards: individual, business and the “Bridge Builder” award. To request a nomination form, email or call 704-565-5075. Nominations can be sent to the Guild via email at or via mail to P.O. Box 33371, Charlotte, NC, 28233. Nominations are due by July 31.

Originally called the Community Service Recognition Award and presented at a Charlotte Pride event in 1993, it was later announced the award would be named after its first recipient, Don King. The award has been presented by two other organizations since then: OutCharlotte and the Charlotte Business Guild.

In 1995, the award was expanded to be presented annually to both a female and male recipient. In 2005, the award was also presented annually to an LGBT-owned or LGBT-friendly business. Finally, in 2008, the “Bridge Builder” straight ally award was also added.
