Donald Trump

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein is suing President Donald Trump over his executive order to dismantle portions of Obamacare.

The order kills key subsidies and is projected to be particularly harmful for those with preexisting conditions, as well as increasing risks of poor or incomplete coverage for individuals across a broad spectrum.

“I am suing President Trump today for his unlawful and reckless decision to stop payments that help hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians afford health insurance,” Stein said in a statement.

“His act wreaks havoc on the health care system: it will lead to higher insurance costs for individuals, cause insurance companies to leave the individual health insurance market, increase the number of people without health insurance, and cost taxpayers $194 billion over the next 10 years. It violates the law and the Constitution,” he continued.

He is joined by the attorneys general for more than a dozen other states, including New York and California, CNBC reports.

Last month, Stein joined 14 other attorneys general in suing the Trump administration over its decision to dismantle the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

There are real concerns for the LGBTQ community, and those living with HIV/AIDS.

Carl Schmid, deputy director of the AIDS Institute, told the Washington Blade the order sets up health care plans that aren’t adequate in covering costs like prescription drugs or preventative care, which he noted is “really important for people at risk of HIV or with HIV.”

“I don’t know what these plans have to cover,” Schmid said. “They’re not regulated by the insurance commissioners. We’re been working so hard to get the insurance commissioners to look at problems in the insurance market; these plans don’t even get regulated by the insurance regulators, so it seems like it’s really substandard.”

“Trump’s executive order is nothing more than a cynical attempt to sabotage the Affordable Care Act,” said. “Beyond undermining the ACA, President Trump’s order will put LGBTQ Americans at risk through substandard health plans that exclude essential health benefits and protections for those with pre-existing conditions and increase premiums for those remaining in other plans.”
