The Young Affiliates of the Mint announced they were seeking art submissions from artists based in the Southern United States for the Mint Museum’s third presentation of the “Coined in the South” exhibit, which will run from December 14 to April 27, 2025, at the Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte.

According to the press release, “Coined in the South” “plans to bridge the gap between museums, galleries and studios by showcasing thought-provoking works by the emerging talents of the South.”

“The exhibition transcends any singular aesthetic, theme, or medium, striving to mirror the rich diversity and creative spirit of the southern arts community.”

The exhibit is “juried,” which means artists’ entries will be competing for prizes, though every artist selected for the exhibit will receive a $350 stipend to help cover shipping and travel expenses.

The winning prizes include:

  • One $10,000 Atrium Health Foundation juror-awarded grand prize
  • One $5,000 Young Affiliates of the Mint member-awarded prize
  • One $1,000 “People’s Choice” prize awarded by the public at the conclusion of the show.

There are certain criteria artists must meet in order to be eligible for consideration for the exhibit. Submitted artwork should have been created within the past two years, be non-perishable, not generate excessive noise pollution and cause no harm to living beings. Installation, video and performance artists are strongly encouraged to apply, but should include installation and space requirement instructions, along with recordings or documentation of previous performances, if available.

The entry fee for the juried exhibition is $40 and each artist can submit up to three works. The entry fee covers all three works artists can submit, but three additional pieces can be submitted for an additional $10, meaning a total of six pieces are allowed per artist.

Artists must submit their works by 11:59 PM on April 1, 2024, at https://coinedinthesouthbiennial2024.artcall.org. Finalists will be announced by the week of June 28, 2024.

All pieces must be delivered and ready to be installed between August 1 and November 1, and all artists are responsible for shipping expenses.
