CHARLOTTE — Belk, Family Dollar and Lowe’s are among the several national companies named in this year’s “Naughty or Nice List” compiled by the right-wing American Family Association. The group says some companies aren’t mentioning the word “Christmas” enough in their holiday season advertising.

The American Family Association distributes a 'It's okay to say Merry Christmas' button.

The American Family Association has long chastised companies that have chosen to make their holiday advertising efforts more inclusive of those individuals who don’t celebrate Christmas. They say such companies are engaging in a “War on Christmas.”

Their list this year includes 54 “Nice” companies, including Belk and Lowe’s. The group says “Nice” companies are “Christmas-friendly” and use the word “Christmas” regularly in their advertising.

Family Dollar was named in the group’s “Naughty” list, which includes 13 companies that “may use ‘Christmas’ sparingly in a single or unique product description, but as a company, does not recognize it.”

In addition to their Christmas “Naughty or Nice List,” the American Family Association regularly engages in anti-gay lobbying and organizing efforts. In 2010, the organization was named a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for their regular use of demonizing misinformation or lies about LGBT people.

The American Family Association’s North Carolina affiliate, the Christian Action League, is among several groups who have formed Vote for Marriage NC, a new referendum committee organized to support an anti-LGBT state constitutional amendment slated for the May 8, 2012, ballot. If passed, the amendment would ban marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.
