HIV/AIDS walks are held across the country to help raise money for awareness organizations, including ones like House of Mercy in Belmont. While there is still no cure for HIV, treatments are now available and are proven to keep viral levels undetectable in people with HIV.

The House of Mercy Annual AIDS Walk is returning for its 29th year just outside of Charlotte. The walk is slated to start at 10 a.m. from the House of Mercy Campus at 100 McAuley Circle.

House of Mercy is a nonprofit organization based out of Belmont, and it works to “empower those living with HIV or AIDS in their transformation toward a more independent life,” according to the organization’s website.

“We respond to unmet needs through direct services as well as seeking ways to change an unjust system,” the website reads. “We envision a world free of stigma and discrimination where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

The AIDS walk takes place every spring and offers a one mile and two mile long path for participants to choose from, each route offering scenic views of historic downtown Belmont. Check-in will begin at 9:30 am at the Sisters of Mercy campus. House of Mercy hopes to raise $40,000 to ensure they are able to serve all who need their resources.

From a press release from House of Mercy:

“By participating in the WALK for AIDS Belmont, you not only show your solidarity with people living with HIV/AIDS but also contribute directly to making a positive impact in our community … Every step taken brings us closer to our goal of creating a world where HIV/AIDS no longer poses a threat, where stigma and discrimination are eradicated, and where all individuals receive the care and support they need.”
