WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — An HIV activist who spoke at two workshops says he never received a $2,500 honorarium owed him.
According to The Winston-Salem Journal, James “J.L.” King spoke at Winston-Salem State University and the LGBT-inclusive Church of the Holy Spirit Fellowship in March 19 and 20 events organized by Speak For Life, an organization working to preent HIV/AIDS in high risk youth and adults. About 100 people attended the workshops.
King is the author of “On the Down Low,” a book exploring gay black men and men who have sex with men.
The Journal reports Speak For Life was given $2,500 by Winston-Salem State University. King says the money should have gone to him. Judson Fraley, Speak For Life’s executive director, has returned phone calls from The Journal.
King told The Journal he does not blame Winston-Salem State University, and will be forced to pursue criminal charges if he continues to go unpaid by Fraley.
“I’m trying to work it out before it gets to that level,” King told the daily newspaper.
