HICKORY, N.C. — OUTright Youth of Catawba Valley will honor native son John Pope at its Third Annual Evening of Distinction, “Silhouettes on a Winter’s Evening,” on Feb. 1, 6:30 p.m., at Youssef’s 242, 242 11th Ave. NE.
Pope will receive the William E. Long Service Award which is given annually to an individual who has exemplified service to the LGBTQ youth in the area.
Raised in Claremont, N.C., he was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School and attended the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
He now heads up a group of companies based in Catawba Country. He has strong history in public service and community involvement and has served as director of a number of non-profit organizations, including the United Way, Chamber of Commerce, YMCA and AIDS Leadership Foothills-area Alliance, Inc., in addition to state and national ones as well.
Tickets are $100 and are available online. Last year’s event was sold out, so organizers encourage purchasing a seat quickly.
