CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — A female student says she was kicked out of her prom for wearing pants and says she wants an apology.
Cherryville High School senior Shafer Rupard wore red jeans, a black shirt and leather jacket to prom. As WBTV originally reported Monday, a teacher approached Rupard after she’d arrived at the prom and was on the dance floor.
“The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said she had a problem with what I was wearing,” Rupard told the Charlotte news station. “I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well I’ll take those off and she was like no, it’s the pants.”
Rupard’s mother, Shawn McQuaige, says there was nothing wrong with what Rupard was wearing. She and Rupard also say the school had not dress code in its student code of conduct or on the prom invitation.
“We looked in the student code of conduct book and there isn’t a dress code at all,” Rupard told WBTV.
McQuaige also spoke to Cherryville High’s assistant principal and showed her the student code of conduct and prom invite. “She looked at it with me and she said you know what you’re right there is no dress code here,” McQuaige said.
Rupard and McQuaige want an apology for the school’s actions. They say they’ve not yet received one.
Cherryville High School staff and Gaston Schools administrators are on vacation this week for spring break.
