Liberating Theologies – New World Order: Christianity in a Global Context

The Liberating Theologies Committee is working hard to create a powerful and culture-shifting event, and we cannot wait to share what we have in store for you! So mark your calendars for September 24-25, 2021 and look out for any upcoming notifications!

Liberating Theologies is going global! A virtual two day experience, Liberating Theologies Speaker Series will feature emerging and established theologians who will share their radical, culture-shifting theological interpretations and perspectives. This year, Liberating Theologies will explore the challenges and opportunities of international communities of faith as a “new world order” emerges in the face of continued colonial, white supremacist legislation and violence. We will explore varying theological perspectives to inform how we make change in our current socio-political climate.

About our 2021 Featured Speaker:

Rev. Dr. Emilie M. Townes, an American Baptist clergywoman, is a native of Durham, North Carolina.  She holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School and a Ph.D. in Religion in Society and Personality from Northwestern University.  Dr. Townes is a Distinguished Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, becoming the first African American to serve as Dean of the Divinity School in 2013.  She is the former Andrew W. Mellon Professor of African American Religion and Theology at Yale University Divinity School and in the fall of 2005, she was the first African American woman elected to the presidential line of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and served as president in 2008.

In addition to our featured speaker, we will have international theologians sharing their work and perspectives with a cohort of emerging activists, leaders, artists, and theologians, followed by a panel moderated and discussion space by Rev. Dr. Emilie Townes. Stay tuned for more updates and announcements!
