ABCs of Community Readiness: Protest Safety
The inspiration for this event has been growing and growing for some time. As a nurse, I have noticed the need for improved education for healthcare professionals surrounding treatment and care for underrepresented minority groups.
I am finishing my Master’s Degree in May. My original capstone idea was to implement improved education surrounding transgender and gender diverse individuals and making SOGI questions mandatory in triage.
This got SO much pushback from the healthcare organization (Atrium/Advocate).
As I began working with Queerolina more, I realized that I had the opportunity to make this so much bigger and bring so many people closer together, across many counties.
I was particularly affected by the execution of Alex Pretti by ICE because I’m a nurse too and I would have done the same exact thing.
I want to support the BIPOC community as well – especially as many of them are also queer and experience even worse healthcare outcomes as a result.
I want to bring together the underrepresented minority communities, especially where there is overlap, in a space where we can provide resources, information, skills, and HOPE!
All that is to say that I feel that Emergency nurses and other healthcare providers should be more active in the community and aware of the available resources to better serve their patients.
