CHARLOTTE — Scholar, theologian and civil rights activist Cornel West will be a featured guest at the RealEyes Bookstore fundraiser for the Charlotte Literary Festival on Dec. 15.
West, who has taken stands against homophobia and heterosexism, has also spoken out against anti-gay social attitudes among African American communities.
“We need to respectfully challenge [rappers] on the issues of misogyny and homophobia,” West once wrote. “You can hear that on the album, too. Quit bashing gay brothers and lesbian sisters. Quit this domestic violence.”
West will speak at the Neighborhood Theatre at 511 E. 36th St. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets to the event are now on sale, two for $25, at RealEyes Bookstore, 3306-A N. Davidson St., 704-377-8989 or 704-737-4335.
