CHARLOTTE — Another Democratic candidate has filed to run for the Charlotte City Council District 5 seat which is being vacated by current incumbent Democratic City Councilmember Nancy Carter.

Darrell Bonapart will face fellow Democratic contender John Autry, who filed his campaign on Monday, in a primary on Sept. 13. No Republican has yet filed to run in the Democratic-leaning district.

In 2009, Bonapart mounted an unsuccessful challenge to unseat Carter. He also received endorsement from the Mecklenburg LGBT Political Action Committee (MeckPAC), which had endorsed Carter in previous elections.

Carter is one of two incumbent council members who opted not to run for reelection this year. Jason Burgess, appointed to complete the term of his late mother, Mayor Pro Tem Susan Burgess,  said when he was selected that he would not run for reelection.

More than a dozen candidates, including out lesbian LaWana Mayfield, have filed to run for city council election since filing opened on Monday. Filing remains open through Friday, Aug. 12. : :
