CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte police officer emailed former Breitbart tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos to thank him for his Facebook posts regarding the police shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott, according to a new explosive report from BuzzFeed News.
The article, titled “Here’s How Breitbart smuggled Nazi and White Nationalist Ideas Into The Mainstream,” is filled with incredible details about how former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon and the openly gay Yiannopoulos courted bigots of all stripes in their race to mainstream extremism for influence and profit.
It relies on emails obtained by BuzzFeed between Yiannopoulos, Bannon, the wealthy financiers, and the low-level grunts and instigators that made all the dirty work possible.
Among the many revelations found in the piece is that a Charlotte cop emailed Yiannopolous his thanks after the Scott shooting.
It is buried in a list of everyday people said to have emailed the controversial figure, who has claimed Black Lives Matter doesn’t care about black lives, refers to transgender people by a slur and says they suffer from a mental illness, and who has encouraged college students to call ICE on fellow students they suspect of being undocumented.
“[He heard] from a Charlotte police officer thanking Yiannopoulos for his ‘common sense Facebook posts’ about the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott (‘BLUE LIVES MATTER,’ Yiannopoulos responded),” BuzzFeed reports.
Yiannopoulos posted a meme on his Facebook page criticizing the media for reporting that Scott’s relatives claimed he had a book and no gun, framing it as, “Media says gun is a book.”
Legal experts have said that the presence of a gun would not be reason enough to forcibly disarm him, as open carry without a license is legal in North Carolina.
Another post charges that Hillary Clinton, the media, NFL players and activists only care when police kill people of color, not white people.
BuzzFeed was also sent a video of Yiannopoulos singing “America the Beautiful,” while infamous white nationalist Richard Spencer, who was present at the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, and others give the Nazi salute.
He has denied being a white supremacist himself, and told BuzzFeed that his poor vision prevented him from seeing Spencer and others giving the Nazi salute.
Spencer was originally slated to appear at a hate rally in Charlotte put together by the same groups that organized the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, before pulling out over safety concerns.
Those concerns, having to do with holding the event in an open space, caused the event, to have taken place in Marshall Park, to be cancelled altogether. Organizers have since said they plan to hold the event in an indoor space, but it is unclear if they will be successful in securing a location after reportedly failing to do so previously.
Yiannopoulos left Breitbart after comments he made that appeared to condone relationships between older men and boys resurfaced. He also lost his deal with Simon & Schuster for his book Dangerous, which he has since self-published.
