Teen featured in HuffPost
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Transgender youth activist Rory Philbrick was featured in an article published on HuffPost.
The teen, a member of Youth OUTRight, has worked to create a tolerant and safe community for LGBTQ youth as they come of age in a less tolerant and safe society. He has battled against the ills of HB2 and HB142 and continues his “second job that doesn’t pay” to bring about justice for those whose lives are impacted by unjust laws.
Philbrick knows too well how an intolerant world looks. He dropped out of high school after bullying made life there too uncomfortable. He is now studying to obtain his General Educational Development diploma while he works part-time as a grocery cashier.
He spends his time traveling the state attending conferences and doing everything he can to champion LGBTQ youth.
Philbrick’s future plans are to become a professional activist.
“I want to do human rights activism. Not just for queer people — for people of color, anybody who’s not a cis, straight, heterosexual, white male. I hope the world gets better. But you have to fight for that,” he said.
