Screening slated
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A screening of the “The Empowerment Project” will be held on Sept. 23, 6 p.m., at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, Alumni Hall, 1 University Heights.
Co-hosts for the evening are Amy Upham and Lori Horvitz. Open discussion and cupcake and coffee reception follows the presentation.
The documentary film was made by an all-woman film crew and features 17 successful women in different careers from pilot to brewmaster to congresswoman. It is produced by Emmy Award-winners Sarah Moshman and Dana Michelle Cook. It took them 34 days to film with 17 film subjects and five filmmakers.
Tickets are $7 through Aug. 31 and $10 afterward and are available online.

Girls get their ‘read’ on
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The Sixth Annual Queen Girls Literacy Reading! has been slated for Aug. 24, 6 p.m., at The Mothlight, 71 W. Haywood Rd.
The “girls” will be teaming up with the Juniper Bends Reading Series while participants enjoy original reads by favorite queer girls, the organizers said.
Readers will be Lillith Latini, Freesia McKee, Lori Horvitz, Indy Srinath, Lockie Hunter, Amy Upham and Ashlee Overholt.
A $3 contribution is appreciated, however, attendees can give more or less, depending upon one’s ability to pay.
