As many as 10 percent of people in Washington, D.C., and 3.5 percent nationally identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender according to a new Gallup and UCLA Williams Institute survey.
The survey is the largest ever to ask questions about participants’ sexual orientation and gender identity.
North Carolina came in with an LGBT population of 3.3 percent, or almost 322,000 of the state’s more than 9.7 million residents.
Exit polling data from November’s elections found that up to five percent of the national electorate identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual.
