CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The staff of a local LGBT youth center say a rainbow flag posted on a flagpole on their property in NoDa was missing when they showed up for work on Tuesday morning.
The alleged theft was discovered by Time Out Youth Center Executive Director Rodney Tucker. He says no other theft or vandalism occurred on site.
Tucker said the group will be reporting the incident to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
Time Out Youth just moved last month to their new center on N. Davidson St. The new facility expands their ability to offer services and programs for LGBT and queer young people ages 11-20, and is close to the LGBT Community Center of Charlotte and the popular Amelie’s French Bakery.
On Tuesday afternoon, qnotes learned that similar vandalism occurred at the LGBT Community Center of Charlotte, also on N. Davidson St. and within walking distance of Time Out Youth Center. Operations Director Glenn Griffin reports that about three weeks ago, he arrived at the center around noon to find both of the center’s two smaller flag poles, usually attached to the building, snapped and lying on the ground. The flags were attached, but the poles had to be replaced. Griffin says the group didn’t report that incident to police. The LGBT Center now takes its two smaller flag poles indoors when they are closed.
Stay tuned to the upcoming Dec. 6-19 print edition of qnotes for more information on Time Out Youth Center’s new facilities.
