CONCORD, N.C. — Competing protesters on both sides of the Chick-fil-A issue gathered outside of one of the fast-food restaurants outside of Charlotte this afternoon.
Nearly two dozen altogether, anti-gay protesters from Operation Save America and a small group of pro-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) protesters stood outside of the Concord Mills Chick-fil-A restaurant on Concord Mills Blvd.
LGBT community members are upset over Chick-fil-A’s millions of dollars in funding to anti-gay organizations. Chick-fil-A’s president has also spoken out against marriage rights for same-sex couples. On Wednesday, an anti-gay Chick-fil-A “Appreciation Day” attracted widespread support and controversy in the Carolinas and nationwide.
Led by convicted stalker and street preacher Flip Benham, protesters with Operation Save America brought along an audio system and several speakers. They preached and played gospel music as the pro-LGBT protesters stood close by.
A national effort had sprung up encouraging pro-LGBT citizens to show up at Chick-fil-As across the country for a “kiss-in” protest. qnotes has not heard of any such kiss-ins planned in the immediate area.
