In recent months, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies have become a target for right-wing politicians’ proposed legislation. The conservative majority UNC Board of Governors recently voted to remove all DEI efforts and policies from North Carolina state universities, creating a new and frighteningly unpredictable environment for the state’s most vulnerable.
The DEI initiatives are integral frameworks utilized to promote and ensure a fair, respectful and inclusive environment by addressing historical and systemic inequalities, creating opportunities for marginalized groups, and developing a culture where every individual feels valued and empowered.
So what does it mean now that these policies are being attacked?
Defining Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Diversity refers to the presence of differences within a given setting. In the context of DEI policies, this encompasses a wide range of attributes including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, socioeconomic status and cultural backgrounds. The goal of diversity policies is to ensure that these varied perspectives are represented and respected within the organization. By embracing diversity, organizations can benefit from a broader range of ideas, improve problem-solving capabilities, and enhance creativity and innovation.
Equity involves the fair treatment, access, and opportunity for all individuals, while striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have historically led to the unfair treatment of marginalized groups. Unlike equality, which provides the same resources and opportunities to everyone, equity takes into account the different needs and circumstances of individuals. Equity policies aim to level the playing field by providing support and resources tailored to the unique challenges faced by underrepresented or disadvantaged groups. This might include targeted recruitment efforts, mentorship programs, or flexible work arrangements to accommodate different needs.
Inclusion is the practice of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported and valued to fully participate. An inclusive organization actively works to ensure that all employees, regardless of their diverse backgrounds, feel they are an integral part of the organization’s dynamics.
Inclusion policies focus on creating a sense of belonging and engagement among all members of the organization. This might involve creating inclusive communication practices, offering diversity training programs, and establishing employee resource groups.
Who is protected by DEI policies?
DEI encompasses people of different ages, races, ethnicities, abilities, disabilities, genders, religions, cultures and sexual orientations. Initiatives within the DEI umbrella often will provide opportunities for groups who have historically been discriminated against. This can include, but is not limited to:
- Members of the LGBTQ+ community
- People of Color
- People over the age of 65
- Indigenous people
- Folks who practice religions other than Christianity, such as Judaism or Islam
- Veterans
Impact of DEI Policies
DEI policies impact a wide array of stakeholders, including employees, customers, and the broader community.
For employees or faculty, DEI policies can significantly enhance job satisfaction, engagement and retention. Employees who feel valued and included are more likely to contribute positively to the organization and stay longer in their positions. These policies also help in attracting a diverse talent pool, which can lead to a more dynamic and innovative workforce. For individuals from marginalized groups, DEI policies can provide essential support and opportunities for career advancement that might otherwise be inaccessible.
For customers, or students when it comes to universities, DEI policies can improve the overall experience. When companies or schools are diverse and inclusive, they are able to better understand and meet the needs of an entire population instead of just certain groups.
On a broader scale, DEI policies can contribute to social change by promoting equality and justice within the community. Organizations that prioritize DEI can serve as role models, encouraging other entities to adopt similar practices. This can help reduce societal inequalities and foster a more inclusive community.
