CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A local DJ has called African-American media and leaders “cowards” for their lack of public defense for former Mayor Patrick Cannon, while also claiming the NAACP is funded by Jewish organizations.
The comments came during local DJs B.J. Murphy’s and Keith Richards’ online radio show. The two, who recently launched online radio station QC102.com, said Cannon was the victim of a “deliberate plot” spearheaded by the FBI, as originally reported by Qcitymetro.com.
Cannon faces federal public corruptions charges after taking more than $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents. Federal investigators also say he solicited $1 million more. Cannon was arrested and resigned on March 26. He will be sentenced Oct. 14 and faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The FBI had been investigating Cannon since August 2010.
Richards began by questioning the NAACP.
“What is the NAACP [doing]… Are they doing anything? A fund, anything to help him out?” Richards asked.
That’s when Murphy stepped in, calling leaders and media “cowards.”
“I ain’t heard nothing from these cowards in Charlotte that are afraid to defend black people,” Murphy said. “I’m calling y’all out because I haven’t heard any black media come to his defense. Not one. Not even the damn station he had a show on. They ain’t say nothing about it.”
A third co-host, Shawn, then asked, “Who funds the NAACP?”
“Well, it’s Jewish organizations [that] fund it,” Murphy responded.
Murphy did not respond to a request for comment or clarification on his remarks.
Murphy is an outspoken supporter of the Nation of Islam and was an organizer of the group’s controversial 2012 anniversary, held in Charlotte, of the Million Man March. The Southern Poverty Law Center has named the Nation of Islam a hate group for its extremist anti-Semitic and anti-LGBT beliefs, particularly from its leader Louis Farrakhan.
Farrakhan has often claimed Jewish people control the media and American government.
“The Jews, a small handful, control the movement of this great nation, like a radar controls the movement of a great ship in the waters … the Jews got a stranglehold on the Congress,” Farrakhan once said.
Murphy also holds anti-gay views. On a recent Sept. 5 show, Murphy and his co-hosts lamented the existence of several celebrities’ LGBT children, including R. Kelly and Magic Johnson.
“That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen,” Murphy said. “Magic Johnson’s son is a flaming gay dude. One of the best NBA players in the history of the game. And, uh, I just couldn’t, man I couldn’t, that would mess me up right there.”
Richards said “karma” was to blame for R. Kelly’s transgender son, with Murphy citing scripture.
“You know that’s what the scripture says… What you do as an adult … it talks about the sins of the fathers will be visited on the children,” Murphy responded. “These things happen because what we do as parents, it does affect the children.”
Murphy added that R. Kelly helped to “curate an overly perverse sexual culture.”
“That stuff comes back on you, man,” he said.
