CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The LGBT Community Center of Charlotte, 2508 N. Davidson St., will hold a fundraising screening of the documentary, “Living in the Overlap,” on March 22, 3-7 p.m.
The film was directed by Cindy Hill and Mary Dalton and tells the story of how transplanted North Carolinians Lennie Gerber and Pearl Berlin met and their journey falling in love and remaining a couple for over 46 years.
Along with reflections and insights about civil rights and the political process, they offer wisdom about enduring relationships, including an overarching philosophy of their relationship. They think of themselves as two circles, often overlapping, who are both independent and interdependent.
More about the film and the couple’s life together is available online.
In 2009, Gerber and Berlin were seen gracing billboards for the Triad Equality Alliance’s campaign. The next year, Gerber was awarded the Equality NC Foundation’s Equality Champion for the Triad Region for her work as an attorney on various civil rights issues. Both Gerber and Berlin were strong opponents against Amendment One that passed in 2012.
They defied the law and were married in June 2013 at Beth David Congregation in Greensboro, N.C. They both stomped glasses in customary Jewish tradition.
