The construction industry is one that’s historically and predominantly heterosexual and male controlled. LGBTQ+ presence is something in the construction trade that is not always so easy to find.
According to a 2023 Gallup poll, almost 8% of adults in the United States identify as LGBTQ+. U.S. construction labor data doesn’t track people’s sexual orientation, but a 2015 study by the United Kingdom’s Construction Industry Council anonymously surveyed nearly 24,000 construction workers.
The results: 1% of workers identified as bisexual, 0.8% identified as a gay man, and 0.2% identified as a gay woman or lesbian. People identifying as LGBTQ+ are a minority in the United States, and, just based off the U.K.’s data alone, an even smaller minority in the construction trades.
LGBTQ+ individuals in construction often face significant barriers, including workplace harassment and a lack of supportive policies. Surveys indicate that many LGBTQ+ workers feel uncomfortable being open about their identity on job sites.
Despite those disheartening statistics, Qnotes connected with Rob Bowers, the owner and operator of Boomtown Renovations.
An out and proud gay man, Bowers shared his experiences in the business. Now in his 40s, he began his career path while still a youthful 20-something.
“I started with a landscape design firm back in my 20s, but always had a knack for interior design, decorating and putting stuff together,” Bowers recalls. “I picked up more and more skills as I went and eventually became a self-employed bathroom contractor and handyman.”

While he acknowledges there are a lack of LGBTQ+ individuals working in the trade, he encourages community members with an interest or the skill to not let social constraints hold them back.
“I think people in the LGBT+ community who have a knack for it should get involved, but don’t think sexuality determines work ethic, and all the stuff that goes with hard manual labor. Do what you’re good at and enjoy,” he offers.
Despite any issues career construction engineers in the cisgender, heterosexual and male-dominated field may feel, Bowers maintains a full calendar and a good sense of humor.
“I’ve found it humorous that I’m more skilled at building, fixing, installing and have a basic knowledge of how things work than most typical macho straight guys,” he says matter-of-factly. “I’m out, but I’m not clockable as gay. Most of my clients think I’m straight until we get to know each other better. Overall I work with wonderful clients and sexuality has never been an issue.”
Bowers looks forward to a time where sexual orientation or gender identity won’t be an issue in the construction and contracting community.
“I hope the future continues on [a] trajectory where quality workmanship has zero to do with anyone sexuality,” he says. “Grit, determination, honesty and hard work will win the respect of anyone.”
Confronting disparities in the trade
There are steps construction companies and contractors can take to ensure their workplaces are safe and inclusive for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Developing and enforcing strong anti-discrimination policies that explicitly include protections for LGBTQ+ workers is crucial. These policies should be integrated into the company’s core values and everyday practices.
Regular diversity and sensitivity training can help educate employees about LGBTQ+ issues and create a more inclusive and respectful workplace culture.
Establishing LGBTQ+ employee resource groups or networks can provide support and advocacy within the company, offering a sense of community and security for LGBTQ+ workers.
Ensuring that workplace environments are welcoming and inclusive is essential. This can involve creating safe spaces for discussion and addressing any instances of discrimination or harassment promptly and effectively.
Inclusive practices not only support ethical and equitable treatment of all employees but also enhance the industry’s reputation, attract a wider talent pool, and improve overall job satisfaction and productivity.
Some other things companies can consider implementing within their organizations include, but are not limited to:
- Provide gender neutral bathrooms.
- Use gender neutral pronouns or ask everyone to assert and respect people’s preferences.
- Adopt DEIA statements and related policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Create a safe reporting system for workplace harassment.
- Survey employees anonymously to gauge people’s sense of welcome and inclusion in the workplace
- Offer resources employees can opt into, such as affinity groups or mentorship programs.

Resources for LGBTQ+ contractors
There are several organizations that exist specifically to assist LGBTQ+ identifying construction workers and contractors.
One organization is Build Out Alliance, a dedicated nonprofit organization promoting the inclusion and representation of LGBTQ+ individuals within the building design and construction industries. Their mission is to create environments where LGBTQ+ professionals can work openly and proudly, leading by example and fostering partnerships with community organizations.
Build Out Alliance does this by organizing a range of events, from informative panels and career development workshops to social gatherings and volunteer opportunities. These events aim to engage both the LGBTQ+ community and allies, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
Another organization helping queer contractors is Dykes with Drills, a nonprofit organization which hosts monthly workshops and various events designed to educate and engage participants in woodworking and building projects. These initiatives have a unique approach to learning, emphasizing exploration and a positive attitude towards failure.
The organization has had a significant impact, including building tiny houses for the homeless and participating in community builds such as skate parks and garden projects.
There’s also the Yestermorrow Design/Build School. Located in Waitsfield, Vermont, it is dedicated to integrating design and building through hands-on education.
The school is committed to developing a diverse, inclusive environment and actively works to address systemic barriers and ensure greater equity and opportunity for marginalized groups, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities and women. Initiatives include DEI training for staff and board members, inclusive course orientations, and the development of curricula focused on design justice and spatial justice.
