CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Longtime Charlotte bar owner Greg Brafford was shot multiple times at his home early Thursday morning in an attempted robbery, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officials and friends.
Brafford is in stable condition at a Charlotte hospital, according to friends.
An incident report from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) says a suspect brandished a handgun outside Brafford’s home at approximately 2:53 a.m. Thursday morning in an attempted robbery. The suspect fired several shots. The report notes Brafford was shot four times. Friends report he suffered two bullet wounds. One round went through the front door of Brafford’s home, where his partner was inside at the time.
Brafford’s injuries were listed as “serious” but not life-threatening.
No suspects have been identified or arrested, according to CMPD spokesperson Jessica Wallin. She also said the investigation is still active and, as such, suspect descriptions are not being released at this time.
Brafford, who owns Woodshed Lounge, has managed or owned gay bars in Charlotte since 1984. His is a longtime philanthropist and fundraiser, supporting House of Mercy and Metrolina AIDS Project, among others.
In a message to friends on Facebook, Woodshed bartender Mike Miller made a plea for support.
“Keep him in your thoughts and prayers to expedite his recovery,” Miller said. “Please drop by the bar tonight or over the next few days if you want to show your support and appreciation for this man.”
