POSITION:
Editorial Internship

qnotes, a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community newspaper, has immediate openings for unpaid educational internships for students in the Charlotte area. Internships can begin at any time and are welcomed by the newspaper’s staff throughout the year.

Description:
The editorial intern will be encouraged to actively participate in and contribute to the editorial decision-making process with the paper’s staff. Interns will work primarily with the editor and be introduced to writing on community-focused news and arts and entertainment stories published online and/or in print.

The intern will gain new skills through direct experience in print and online news and feature writing, proofreading and copy-editing, print publishing and new media/social media. Additionally, interns will leave qnotes with a set of published work, having contributed to and independently-written several news articles, features and possible cover stories.

Internship opportunities will allow an intern to learn and practice new skills in:
— gathering, composing and copy-editing local and community-focused news, features and arts & entertainment content for publication online and in the newspaper’s print edition;
— production of online news and features content;
— layout and production of written and graphic material in a print publication; and
— utilization of new media/social media in journalism and community news reporting.

Internship applicants should possess:
— an ambitious, independent-minded and assertive attitude;
— a commitment to and passion for LGBTQ issues;
— writing and copy-editing/proofreading skills;
— creativity and ability to generate unique and varied story ideas/angles;
— both a take-charge attitude and ability to work as part of a team;
— ability to meet firm writing deadlines.

Intern applicants should be working toward a degree, preferably in journalism or other communications fields. Students studying in other fields but with an interest in future professional work in or for the LGBTQ community are also encouraged to apply.

The intern can only best learn when directly engaging with his or her work on a regular basis. Therefore, we require a minimum of 5-10 hours commitment each week, with minimal though occasional internship duties performed independently or with the editorial team at home, in evenings or on weekends dependent upon news cycle, community events and other assignments granted the intern. qnotes understands some students will face time constraints or other burdens due to course load or other work schedules and will work with the student to ensure a proper life, work and school balance.

Compensation:
This is an unpaid educational internship.

NOTE: Students will be responsible for coordinating their college’s or university’s acceptance/recognition of their internship hours at our office. Credits must be arranged between a student and their faculty advisor or other faculty members. Staff will work with the student to complete any necessary college paperwork or other items.

Deadline to apply:
Open until filled.

To apply:
Send a cover letter, resume and two writing samples (at least 400 words each; no school papers or essays, please) to the editor via email at editor@qnotescarolinas.com or via mail to:
